Persephone is the ancient Greek queen of the Underworld and goddess of spring. The myth of her abduction by Hades (King of the Underworld), her sojourn in the underworld, and her cyclical return to the surface represent her functions as a goddess of death, the embodiment of spring, and the personification of vegetation. She is also a goddess of all aspects of womanhood and female rites of passage, including girlhood, marriage, and childbearing.
