What is a Book of Shadows? What do I put in it?

A BoS (Book of Shadows) is a personal record of your magical journey.  It’s a place where you store your musings, observations and ideas on your craft. It’s a place to write down things you find meaningful and, also, things you find confusing.  If you want to keep a record, it’s helpful to add dates, times, moon phases, and intentions of your spells and how you felt about doing the ritual and with the ritual’s end results.  Then later you can review this information from a different perspective to see what you’ve learned.   Why is this important?  There is a quote by Socrates used in many witchcraft paths “To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.”  It’s much easier to see the truth of yourself from an outside perspective and this can be accomplished by writing down your thoughts and then reviewing that information later.  Clarity comes from alternative perspectives and the movement of time helps us to look at our experiences from a different viewpoint.

A Book of Shadows is often confused with a grimoire.  The BoS is a personal journal.  A grimoire is more like a textbook of spells, practices and rules.   Covens can use grimoires to document the items in their tradition although many covens do not have a formal grimoire as they would prefer to keep the secrets of their traditions hidden. How you use and interpret the information from a grimoire would be stored in your personal BoS to help grow your path’s practices and knowledge.

It’s all very personal.  To write or not to write.  You decide.
