The first step is to try and find the source of the bad energy. Many people erroneously believe that they have been hexed or cursed because their homes feel off. We sometimes hear that a person believes they have a ghost, spirit or demon in the home. This is usually not the case.
In our personal spaces we collect things. Often they are things that we want there like photos, art, or any personal collectible. What we often forget is that our emotions and anxiety, and those of the people in our spaces, also collect in the corners and create eddies of angst that we can feel.
It’s a good idea to routinely cleanse your space to remove the cobwebs of ill that collect just through the course of living. Many people will use sage to cleanse. Sage is a great cleansing tool, but it’s like a psychic scrubby — it removes all energies, not just bad energy. Once you have cleansed the space with sage you’ve created a void or vacuum that will invite the next passing energy or entity to come in. It’s important to re-fill the void with something that’s pleasing to you immediately after saging. We suggest refilling with incense, the sound of a child’s laughter, song or even a mist of essential oils and water.
You can do a lighter cleansing by starting at your front door and going widdershins (counter clockwise) around your house ringing a bell. The bell’s vibration will loosen up the bad energy and prepare it to be moved. Have someone follow behind you with a broom/besom and “sweep” the energy as they follow the sound of the bell. Once the bell and broom have reached the front door again, sweep the energies out the door. Then, to refill the space, start at the front door again, moving deosil (clockwise) through the house. You can sing or wave incense or some other delightful thing to restore the balance in your home.
