How to start practicing Witchcraft

Many new practitioners are unsure how to begin walking the path of Craft. Yoda covered this in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, when he said, “Do or do not. There is no try”.  This is a reminder that our full and magical potential is not accessed through half-measures—it responds to conviction. In that sense, “do or do not” isn’t about perfection; it’s about presence.  To successfully manifest magic you must step forward and do it.  Saying “I’ll try” indicates that you don’t have confidence in yourself.

Is there a downside?  Will you possibly make a mistake?  Yes.  Will there be consequences?  Yes. But there is no Hell and you will survive the mistakes you may make.   As my High Priestess used to say, “there is no such thing as SAFE magic”.   Witchcraft is powerful.

And let’s talk about the term baby witch.  Remember, there is power in naming.  You may want to consider whether using the term “baby witch” serves you.  While it’s trendy and all, it’s a form of self-talk that may limit your growth.

Start your Craft small by honoring your curiosity and willingness to incorporate new ideas.  Then begin connecting with nature, focusing on self-love, and learning basic energy work; experiment to see what resonates with you.  There are many forms of being a Witch.  It is not the power of the Gods, or something that is bestowed upon us – it is the Craft of the Witch that will move you along your path.  That may include herbalism, deity work, ancestor veneration, psychic work, scrying, spell candles, demonology and a multitude of new pantheons, gods and ideas.  Be open to everything you read…and then remember than 90% of it is someone else’s viewpoint which may not necessarily be something you agree with or use in your practice. Keep a journal of your thoughts and experiences and start doing magic today.
